Dry Skin Brushing:The Natural Way to Detox

Dry skin brushing may be the single most important thing you can do as part of daily detoxing, with truly amazing results, here are some of my top tips on how to skin brush for maximum benefit.

Why skin brush?
The skin is the body’s largest organ of elimination and waste management and dry skin brushing is one of the most powerful ways to exfoliate the skin and help the body eliminate toxins. Think of it as removing the top layer of dead skin debris, allowing your body to expel more and more toxins.

Due to our inactive lifestyle, lack of exercise and widespread use of anti-perspirants, we’re unable to discharge waste and toxins through sweat as nature intended, and instead keep them trapped in cells and tissues. Brushing the skin promotes movement and cleansing of the entire lymphatic system and since the lymph system is a vital part of detoxification, dry skin brushing is key to helping the body purify itself naturally.

The benefits of skin brushing
Dry skin brushing tones the skin, stimulating skin metabolism and the removal of dead skin cells, hence any nutritive oils or moisturising creams can penetrate the skin more deeply and effectively. You’ll also be pleased to know skin brushing helps to minimise the appearance of cellulite too. And because it has such a stimulating effect, it’s a great way to wake your body up in the morning and feel ready to face the day.

How to skin brush
• Use a natural bristle brush on dry skin for 5-10 minutes daily in the mornings before you bathe or shower. As it’s very stimulating always do it in the mornings and not evenings as you may find it hard to fall asleep!

• Try to cover the whole body, except the face, brushing in long stroking movements, always in the direction of your heart. Start from the point furthest away from your heart, the right foot and leg, then left foot and leg, right hand and arm, left hand and arm, back and front.

One of my favourite things to do after dry skin brushing and showering is to apply Divine Oil from Caudalie, a luxurious dry oil that smells truly wonderful! Do this daily and you will see how invigorating and energising it feels. For most people it requires very little effort to make this part of your daily ritual.

Please note: Dry skin brushing is not recommended when constipated, as this will create even more material needing to be excreted via the bowel. Do not apply skin brushing to your face, varicose veins, inflammatory skin conditions (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, acne, sunburn, open wounds) or when pregnant.
